A Better Riding Experience Starts With Better HearingProtection
Long rides should leave you with memories - not ringing ears.
Protect Your Hearing Every Time You Ride
Motorcycling is one of the most exhilarating ways to travel but prolonged exposure to wind noise at speed can cause permanent hearing damage, even when wearing a high-quality helmet.
Many riders are surprised to learn that wind turbulence inside a helmet can regularly exceed 100dB at motorway speeds, which is well above safe long-term exposure levels.
Unlike engine noise, wind noise is continuous. On long rides
this constant exposure can contribute to:
- Hearing fatigue
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
- Reduced concentration
- Stress and exhaustion
- Long-term hearing loss
Even short daily commutes can add up over time.
That’s why more riders are now choosing our custom motorcycle
hearing protection designed specifically for use under helmets.
Why Motorcycle Riders Need Hearing Protection
Modern helmets are designed to reduce noise, but no helmet can completely eliminate the damaging effects of high-speed wind turbulence.
Once speeds increase above 50–60mph, wind roar becomes the biggest source of noise exposure for most riders.
Without hearing protection, riders may experience:
- Ringing ears after riding
- Headaches and fatigue
- Difficulty hearing speech clearly after long journeys
- Increased stress and reduced focus
- Gradual hearing damage over time
Wearing proper motorcycle ear plugs helps reduce harmful noise levels while still allowing you to remain aware of traffic, sirens, navigation prompts, and intercom systems.
For touring riders and commuters alike, hearing protection quickly becomes one of the most important pieces of riding equipment.
The Problem With Standard Foam Ear Plugs
Many riders start with disposable foam ear plugs, but these are rarely designed specifically for motorcycle use.
Foam plugs can:
- Become uncomfortable under helmets
- Create pressure points during long rides
- Block too much important sound
- Loosen during riding
- Require constant replacement
- Distort intercom and music audio
Because generic plugs are not moulded to the shape of your ears, they often fail to provide a consistent seal, especially during longer journeys.
Why Choose Custom Moulded Motorcycle Ear Plugs?
Custom motorcycle ear plugs are individually moulded from impressions of your ears to create a precise, secure fit that remains comfortable for extended riding.
Unlike universal ear plugs, custom moulded hearing protection is designed to:
- Sit flush under motorcycle helmets
- Reduce wind noise effectively
- Improve long-distance riding comfort
- Minimise fatigue
- Remain secure at high speeds
- Provide consistent protection every ride
Many riders also find that reducing excessive wind noise actually improves clarity when listening to helmet communication systems, sat nav prompts, or music.
Because the fit is tailored to your ears, custom plugs can be worn comfortably for hours without the irritation commonly caused by disposable alternatives.
Protect Your Hearing Without Losing Road Awareness
A common concern among riders is whether hearing protection will make it harder to hear surrounding traffic.
In reality, quality motorcycle ear plugs are designed to reduce damaging wind frequencies while still allowing important environmental sounds to remain audible. Riders often report:
- Clearer intercom audio
- Less distracting wind roar
- Improved concentration
- Reduced exhaustion after long journeys
The result is a quieter, more controlled riding experience without feeling isolated from the road.

FAQs
Why is hearing protection important for motorcycling?
Why is hearing protection important for motorcycling?
Many riders do not realise that wind noise inside a helmet can reach damaging levels surprisingly quickly. At motorway speeds, prolonged exposure to wind and engine noise can contribute to permanent hearing damage and tinnitus over time.
Can riding a motorcycle really damage your hearing?
Can riding a motorcycle really damage your hearing?
Yes.
Research has shown that wind noise whilst riding can regularly exceed safe exposure levels, particularly above 40–50mph. Long-term exposure to these noise levels may lead to:
- Permanent hearing loss
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
- Listening fatigue
- Reduced concentration while riding
Many riders only notice the damage years later, which is why prevention is so important.
Why are your custom motorcycle earplugs better than foam earplugs?
Why are your custom motorcycle earplugs better than foam earplugs?
Our custom earplugs are moulded specifically to the shape of your ears, creating a far more secure, comfortable, and consistent fit than disposable foam earplugs.
Benefits of our custom earplugs include:
- Greater comfort on long rides
- Better fit under helmets (slim profile)
- Consistent protection every time
- Reusable and long-lasting (5-year lifespan)
- Less pressure inside the ear canal
- Reduced likelihood of loosening while riding
- Potentially improved attenuation (if generic earplugs do not fit you well)
- Maintain situational awareness
Can I still hear traffic, sirens, and important sounds while wearing your earplugs?
Can I still hear traffic, sirens, and important sounds while wearing your earplugs?
Yes, our motorcycle earplugs reduce harmful wind noise while still allowing you to hear important surrounding sounds.
Our custom motorcycle earplugs are designed to lower damaging frequencies and excessive wind roar without completely isolating you from your environment.
Most riders quickly find that they can still clearly hear:
- Traffic around them
- Sirens
- Intercom systems
- Sat nav instructions
- Engine feedback
In many cases, riders report improved focus because excessive wind noise is reduced.
Are your motorcycle earplugs comfortable under a helmet?
Are your motorcycle earplugs comfortable under a helmet?
Yes - our custom motorcycle earplugs are specifically designed to sit flush inside the ear, making them ideal for use under tight-fitting helmets.
Unlike many foam plugs, they are far less likely to:
- Create pressure points
- Shift position during rides
- Cause discomfort during longer rides
They are also manufactured from a super soft medical grade silicone, meaning riders repeatedly report forgetting they even have them in!
What is the difference between your Squidgy and Filtered Earplugs?
What is the difference between your Squidgy and Filtered Earplugs?
Our Filtered Earplugs include a specialist acoustic filter designed to reduce certain frequencies more so than others (with a lower attenuation at typical speech frequencies). Our Filtered Earplugs offer 23dB or 29dB (SNR) of hearing protection in comparison to our Squidgy earplug which offers 30dB (SNR).
Our Filtered Earplugs are ideal for riders who:
- Want better awareness of surroundings
- Use an intercom system and would like to continue using their padded speakers
- Require reduced wind noise without muffled hearing
Our Squidgy earplugs provide maximum noise reduction and isolation (30dB SNR) and are often preferred for:
- Track riding / racing
- Very long motorway journeys
- Riders wanting the highest level of attenuation possible
- Riders not using an intercom system
I am using an intercom system, which product is best for me?
I am using an intercom system, which product is best for me?
Our wired SoundEar or SoundEar Pro are our motorcycling earplugs containing built in speakers, providing audio via a 3.5mm jack connection.
This product range is the perfect replacement for the padded speakers provided with intercom systems (provided they also have a 3.5mm jack), combining 30dB (SNR) of hearing protection with high quality audio at a low volume.
Our SoundEars are compatible with any intercom system containing a 3.5mm socket for the padded speakers, whilst we can also provide adapter leads for some SENA and Interphone models. We also provide a modification service for SENA SRL systems in order to make them compatible with our SoundEar range.
Alternatively, if you would like to keep your existing padded speakers for your intercom system we would recommend our Filtered Earplugs, although the audio clarity will not be as clear as with our SoundEars.
If you have any questions on the compatibility of our products with your intercom system, please email sales@ultimateear.com.
I would like to listen to music on the bike, which product is best for me?
I would like to listen to music on the bike, which product is best for me?
Our Bluetooth SoundEar or Bluetooth SoundEar Pro are the best options if you'd just like to connect to your mobile phone for listening to music, podcasts or directions. Our Pro version has dual balanced armature drivers and therefore offers a far more detailed listening experience (in comparison to the Bluetooth SoundEar).
If you are looking for a product to connect to your intercom to replace your padded speakers (if they have a 3.5mm jack), then our wired (non-bluetooth) SoundEar or SoundEar Pro will be the best option. Our Bluetooth SoundEar range will not pair to intercom systems unfortunately.
What is the difference between the SoundEar/Bluetooth SoundEar and the SoundEar Pro/Bluetooth SoundEar Pro?
What is the difference between the SoundEar/Bluetooth SoundEar and the SoundEar Pro/Bluetooth SoundEar Pro?
The Pro versions benefit from dual balanced armature drivers (rather than a single balanced armature speaker as per the SoundEar/Bluetooth SoundEar), resulting in a far punchier bass and a more detailed listening experience overall.

What is the lifespan of your products?
What is the lifespan of your products?
We recommend replacing your earplugs with new ear impressions every 5 years as your ears are constantly growing and changing shape.
In terms of the earplugs themselves, they will not deteriorate as they are manufactured from a high quality medical grade silicone.
Our products that incorporate speakers are fully serviceable and repairable so if any individual components fail within 5 years we can replace those specific components (such as an individual speaker or the cable).
